Stephen Wiltshire sketches Brisbane city from memory

Stephen Wiltshire has the uncanny ability of being able to draw an entire detailed landscape from memory after seeing it just once.

I first heard about this guy after seeing this impressive video a couple of years ago.

So I just found out that he's actually been in Brisbane for the past few days to do his thang with the Brisbane cityscape; that is to view it once, then sketch it. OK so he might refer to a couple of snaps he also takes on his phone during the viewing phase, but the sketching phase is all from the mind.

According to his blog, the planned helicopter flight got canned due to poor weather and he instead had to settle for a ride on the Brisbane Wheel to get the view he needed. So I guess the wheel does have it's use then ;)

Stephen then spent the next four days at the State Library of Queensland demonstrating to the viewing public his amazing ability by creating a 4m wide panaroma of Brisbane city.

View the finished product below or otherwise catch it, after it's been framed, back at the State Library for six months in 2012.

Harvest Festival videos

Well what can I say other than the Harvest Festival turned out to be an awesome day and night of music, despite the distinct lack of shade from the glaring sun at the Riverstage in Brisbane's botanical gardens.

Picks of the day for me include Portishead (speechless), TV on the radio, and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. I'll update this post after uploading all of my videos but I'll be posting vids of Portishead, Holy Fuck, The Flaming Lips, Mogwai, Seekae, Bright Eyes, TV on the radio, Mercury Rev, The Family Stone, Dappled Cities, The Walkmen and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble.

I also ended up getting along to the Hi Fi to see Japan's DJ Krush who I'd not heard of and was pleasantly surprised and got to finish the night with a good boogie which I needed to pump my energy levels after a long day. So I've got a compilation of vids to post of his set too.

Get Buffed in Brisbane - www.buffed.org.au

If you're anything like me, every time you put on your work/play leather shoes/boots you look at them and think "I really need to give them a shine..I'll have to do that this weekend"... and of course you rarely do.

Well a new initiative from The Wise Foundation (the people who kicked off The Big Issue) may provide just the service you (and I) need. They're helping job-challenged people start their very own 'Buffed' street-front shoe-shine enterprise.

The website suggests that there are four Brisbane city locations currently being finalised but none are actually in operation as yet. I for one look forward to being able to fit a quick buff into my lunch time.

Read all about it here: http://www.buffed.org.au/how-it-works.aspx
